No one grows in isolation. Everything I know about coaching, I learned first as someone being coached.
It started in a pool, not a gym. Competitive swimming through my school years, and a coach named Herbie who taught me something no textbook could: what it actually feels like when a coach earns real trust from an athlete. I didn’t know it at the time, but that lesson would outlast the sport by a decade.
At university, studying Exercise Science and later Exercise Physiology, I got my first break in the industry because a woman named Jeanette saw the effort before I had the qualifications to justify it, and pushed for me to get hired at the University Gym. Someone believed in me before I’d given them much reason to.
After graduating, working in workplace rehabilitation, I met David, an Exercise Physiologist whose clinical rigour helped shape how I think. He taught me to question everything before I prescribed anything. That discipline still governs how I coach today. A clinical setting doesn’t reward guesswork, and neither does contest preparation.
Eventually I transitioned my workplace back into the gym as an Exercise Physiologist. It was at this time I met Brandon Kempter, who became my first bodybuilding coach, the one who put me on stage for the first time and ignited my passion. Athlete to Contest Preparation Coach: what followed was four years with Brandon & Rachel in BK Conditioning. Refining not just my prescription, but professionalism, standards, and what it means to build a team, community, and culture. From that first show. To years coaching athletes together. To eventually competing together in the same season as brothers in iron.
None of this happened by accident. Every part of it happened because someone took the time to guide me, challenge me, and invest in my development, foundations I still build on today. Bodybuilding is a solo sport, but it’s never a solo journey. It’s built on the shoulders of those who came before you: the ones who showed you the ropes, answered your questions, and believed in you before you believed in yourself.
This brand exists because of that lineage, not apart from it. And the responsibility doesn’t end with me. Learning never stops, and neither does the responsibility to give back. Every athlete and coach I have the privilege to guide is part of the same tradition: observation, correction, shared experience, passed forward. That’s the real driving force behind HYPERTROPHIQ.
